Tecvayli (teclistamab-cqyv) is a prescription drug used to treat multiple myeloma in certain adults. It’s given as an injection under the skin. This drug isn’t known to interact with alcohol, other medications, or supplements.

An interaction can occur because one substance causes another substance to have a different effect than expected. Interactions can also occur if you have certain health conditions.

There are no reports of Tecvayli interacting with specific drugs. But interactions with other medications could be recognized in the future. For example, people who’ve received Tecvayli since it became available could report new interactions.

It’s important to note that Tecvayli may cause cytokine release syndrome.* This condition may cause your body to break down certain other medications more slowly than it should. This can cause levels of other drugs to build up in your system, which could raise your risk of side effects from those drugs.

For this reason, it’s important to tell your doctor and pharmacist about any prescription, over-the-counter, or other drugs you take. Sharing this information with them may help prevent possible interactions with Tecvayli. (To learn whether Tecvayli interacts with herbs or vitamins and supplements, see the “Are there other interactions with Tecvayli?” section below.)

If you have questions about drug interactions that may affect you, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

* Tecvayli has a boxed warning about this risk. To learn more, see the “Boxed warnings” section at the beginning of this article.

Tecvayli is not known to interact with alcohol. But Tecvayli and alcohol can cause some similar side effects, such as nausea and fatigue. Drinking alcohol during Tecvayli treatment may worsen these side effects.

If you have questions about consuming alcohol during your Tecvayli treatment, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Tecvayli may have other interactions. They could occur with supplements, foods, vaccines, or even lab tests. See below for details. Note that the information below does not include all other possible interactions with Tecvayli.

For this reason, it’s still important to check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any of these products while receiving Tecvayli.

Tecvayli and vitamins

There are currently no reports of Tecvayli interacting with vitamins. But this doesn’t mean that vitamin interactions won’t be recognized in the future.

Does Tecvayli interact with cannabis or CBD?

There are currently no reports of Tecvayli interacting with cannabis (commonly called marijuana) or cannabis products such as cannabidiol (CBD). But as with any drug or supplement, talk with your doctor before using cannabis with Tecvayli.

Note: Cannabis is illegal at a federal level but is legal in many states to varying degrees.

Certain medical conditions or other health factors may raise the risk of interactions with Tecvayli. Before starting Tecvayli treatment, talk with your doctor about your health history. They’ll determine whether Tecvayli is right for you.

Health conditions or other factors that might interact with Tecvayli include:

Current infection: Before starting Tecvayli treatment, tell your doctor if you have an infection. Treatment with Tecvayli may cause new infections or worsen an existing infection. Your doctor may treat the infection before you receive Tecvayli.

Pregnancy: It’s not known whether Tecvayli is safe to receive while pregnant. But based on how the drug works, it may cause harm to a fetus. If you can become pregnant, your doctor will likely give you a pregnancy test before starting Tecvayli to make sure you’re not pregnant. You should use birth control during your Tecvayli treatment and for 5 months after your last dose.

If you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk with your doctor before receiving Tecvayli.

Breastfeeding: It’s not known whether Tecvayli is safe to receive while breastfeeding and whether it passes into breast milk. But because of the risk of serious side effects, breastfeeding is not recommended during your Tecvayli treatment or for 5 months after your last dose.

If you’re breastfeeding or planning to do so, talk with your doctor about your options.

Allergic reaction: If you’ve had an allergic reaction to Tecvayli or any of its ingredients, your doctor will likely not prescribe Tecvayli. This is because receiving the drug could cause another allergic reaction. You can ask your doctor about other treatments that may be better choices for you.

Taking certain steps can help you avoid interactions with Tecvayli. Before starting treatment, talk with your doctor and pharmacist. Things to discuss with them include:

  • Whether you drink alcohol or use cannabis.
  • Other medications you take, as well as any vitamins, supplements, and herbs. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you fill out a medication list.
  • What to do if you start taking a new drug during your Tecvayli treatment.

If you still have questions about Tecvayli and its possible interactions, talk with your doctor.

Questions you may want to ask your doctor include:

  • Do I need to tell you if I start taking another medication or supplement during my Tecvayli treatment?
  • How do Tecvayli’s interactions compare with those of other cancer treatments?
  • What should I do if I think I’m having a drug interaction with Tecvayli?
