Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib) is a prescription drug that’s used to treat certain types of lymphoma and leukemia. This drug can interact with some supplements and other medications, including clopidogrel (Plavix) and rosuvastatin (Crestor).

Jaypirca is prescribed to treat the following cancers in adults in specific situations:

Jaypirca comes as an oral tablet. Its active ingredient is pirtobrutinib, which is what makes the drug work.

An interaction can occur because one substance causes another substance to have a different effect than expected. Interactions can also occur if you have certain health conditions.

Keep reading to learn about Jaypirca’s possible interactions. And for more information about Jaypirca, including its uses, see this article.

Before you start taking Jaypirca, tell your doctor and pharmacist about any prescription, over-the-counter, or other drugs you take. Sharing this information with them may help prevent possible interactions. Jaypirca is not known to interact with alcohol. But Jaypirca and alcohol can cause fatigue and certain other similar side effects. So these side effects may be worsened if you drink alcohol during Jaypirca treatment.

If you have questions about consuming alcohol while taking Jaypirca, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Learn more about certain drug interactions that can occur with Jaypirca.

Interaction with clopidogrel

Jaypirca can interact with clopidogrel (Plavix). This drug is prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack in certain situations.

What could happen

Taking Jaypirca with clopidogrel could make clopidogrel less effective. This is because Jaypirca slows the activity of a certain enzyme (protein). This enzyme converts clopidogrel to its active form that works in your body.

As a result, the level of clopidogrel’s active form in your body may be lower. This could prevent clopidogrel from being effective.

What you can do

Before starting Jaypirca treatment, tell your doctor if you take clopidogrel. They can determine whether it’s safe to take these medications together. If you take Jaypirca with clopidogrel, your doctor will monitor how well clopidogrel is working.

If you have questions about taking Jaypirca with clopidogrel, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Interaction with certain statins

Jaypirca can interact with certain statins, which are prescribed to treat high cholesterol. Examples of statins that may interact with Jaypirca include:

What could happen

Taking Jaypirca with certain statins could increase your risk of side effects from the statin drug. A specific enzyme breaks down certain statins in your body. Because Jaypirca slows the activity of this enzyme, your body could have a higher level of the statin. In turn, this could increase your risk of side effects from the drug.

What you can do

Before taking Jaypirca, tell your doctor if you’re taking a statin. They can assess whether Jaypirca interacts with it and whether it’s safe to take the medications together. In some cases, your doctor may switch you to a different statin that isn’t known to interact with Jaypirca.

If you have questions about taking Jaypirca with certain statins, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Interaction with blood thinners

Jaypirca can interact with blood thinners. These drugs are used to treat and help prevent blood clots in certain situations. Examples of blood thinners include:

What could happen

Taking Jaypirca with certain blood thinners could increase your risk of side effects from the blood thinner. Jaypirca slows the activity of a certain enzyme (protein) that breaks down certain blood thinners in your body. So it may raise the level of the blood thinner in your body.

Also, the risk of bleeding with Jaypirca and certain blood thinners may be increased in certain people. These are people who have kidney problems, such as kidney failure.

In addition, both Jaypirca and blood thinners can cause bleeding as a side effect. So taking these drugs together can raise your risk of bleeding.

What you can do

Before starting Jaypirca treatment, tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner. They can tell you whether it’s safe to take the medications together.

If you take Jaypirca with a blood thinner, tell your doctor right away if you have signs of unusual bleeding. This may include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bruising more easily. Your doctor will advise you on how to manage these symptoms. They can also tell you whether you should stop taking either drug.

If you have questions about taking Jaypirca with blood thinners, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Jaypirca may have other interactions. They could occur with supplements, foods, vaccines, or even lab tests. See below for details. Note that the information below does not include all other interactions possible with Jaypirca.

Does Jaypirca interact with supplements?

Before you start taking Jaypirca, talk with your doctor and pharmacist about any herbs or vitamins and supplements you take. Sharing this information with them may help you avoid possible interactions.

If you have questions about interactions that may affect you, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Jaypirca interactions with herbs

Jaypirca can interact with St. John’s wort, which some people take for mood support.

St. John’s wort may hasten the activity of an enzyme that helps break down Jaypirca in your body. This can reduce the amount of Jaypirca in your body and make the drug less effective.

Your doctor will likely suggest that you not take St. John’s wort with Jaypirca. They can recommend an alternative for your condition.

Jaypirca and vitamins

Jaypirca has not been reported to interact with vitamins. But this doesn’t mean that vitamin interactions won’t be recognized in the future.

For this reason, it’s still important to check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any vitamins while taking Jaypirca.

Does Jaypirca interact with food?

Jaypirca has not been reported to interact with food. If you have questions about eating certain foods during treatment with Jaypirca, talk with your doctor.

Does Jaypirca interact with vaccines?

Jaypirca has not been reported to interact with vaccines. If you have questions about getting certain vaccines during Jaypirca treatment, talk with your doctor.

Does Jaypirca interact with lab tests?

Jaypirca has not been reported to interact with lab tests. If you have questions about having certain lab tests during treatment with Jaypirca, talk with the healthcare professional ordering the test.

Does Jaypirca interact with cannabis or CBD?

Jaypirca has not been reported to interact with cannabis (commonly called marijuana) or cannabis products such as cannabidiol (CBD). But as with any drug or supplement, talk with your doctor before using cannabis during treatment with Jaypirca.

Note: Cannabis is illegal at a federal level but is legal in many states to varying degrees.

Certain medical conditions or other health factors may raise the risk of interactions with Jaypirca. Before taking Jaypirca, talk with your doctor about your health history. They’ll determine whether Jaypirca is right for you.

Health conditions or other factors that might interact with Jaypirca include:

Kidney problems: If you have a kidney problem, such as kidney failure, your body may not break down Jaypirca as it should. This can lead to a high level of the drug in your body. In turn, this can raise your risk of side effects from Jaypirca.

If you have a kidney problem, your doctor can help determine whether Jaypirca is the right treatment option for you. If they prescribe Jaypirca, they may prescribe you a lower dosage of the drug. Doing so will help minimize your risk of side effects.

Current infection: Before taking Jaypirca, tell your doctor if you have an infection. The drug could worsen your infection or raise your risk of getting a new one. Your doctor may delay the start of Jaypirca treatment until after the infection is treated.

Bleeding problems: Jaypirca may increase your risk of bleeding. If you already have a bleeding problem, such as hemophilia, talk with your doctor. They can advise whether Jaypirca is safe for you.

Recent or planned surgery: Taking Jaypirca in the week before or after surgery may increase your risk of bleeding. Your doctor may advise you to temporarily stop Jaypirca treatment around the time of your procedure.

Heart rhythm problems: Jaypirca may cause irregular heart rhythm as a side effect. You may have a higher risk of this side effect if you already have a heart rhythm problem. Talk with your doctor about whether Jaypirca is safe for you.

High blood pressure: Before taking Jaypirca, tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure. Jaypirca may increase your blood pressure, which could worsen it. Your doctor can determine whether Jaypirca is a safe treatment option for you.

Pregnancy: Jaypirca is not safe to take during pregnancy. If you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk with your doctor before taking Jaypirca.

Breastfeeding: Jaypirca is not safe to take while breastfeeding. If you’re breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, talk with your doctor about your options.

Allergic reaction: If you’ve had an allergic reaction to Jaypirca or any of its ingredients, your doctor likely won’t prescribe Jaypirca. This is because taking the drug could cause another allergic reaction. You can ask your doctor about other treatments that may be better choices for you.

Taking certain steps can help you avoid interactions with Jaypirca. Before starting treatment, talk with your doctor and pharmacist. Things to discuss with them include:

  • Whether you drink alcohol or use cannabis.
  • Other medications you take, as well as any vitamins, supplements, and herbs. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you fill out a medication list.
  • What to do if you start taking a new drug during your Jaypirca treatment.

It’s also important to understand Jaypirca’s label and other paperwork that may come with the drug. Colored stickers that describe interactions may be on the label. And the paperwork (sometimes called the patient package insert or medication guide) may have other details about interactions. (If you did not get paperwork with Jaypirca, ask your pharmacist to print a copy for you.)

If you have difficulty reading or understanding this information, your doctor or pharmacist can help.

Taking Jaypirca exactly as prescribed can also help prevent interactions.

If you still have questions about Jaypirca and its possible interactions, talk with your doctor.

Questions you may want to ask your doctor include:

  • Do other drugs that could treat my condition have similar interactions?
  • Should I tell you if I start taking another medication or supplement during my Jaypirca treatment?
  • If Jaypirca interacts with a health condition I have, can I still take it?
