You can pay your Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, and Medicare Part D income-related monthly adjustment amounts online using MyMedicare. Medicare also accepts payments from online bank bill pay services.

Not everyone receives a bill for Medicare. For example, if you pay your Medicare premiums out of your Social Security retirement benefits, you might never get a bill from Medicare.

If you do get bills from Medicare, you can pay them online by setting up a MyMedicare account, and there’s no fee to use this service.

Many Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, and Medigap plans also accept online payments.

This article reviews online payments for Medicare.

You’ll need to be enrolled in both parts of Original Medicare to get any additional parts of Medicare. No matter what other Medicare parts you use, you always pay for Original Medicare.

You might be able to pay for these parts online, but it’ll depend on the company and your specific plans. Some companies might not offer online payments. However, you should still be able to use online bill pay from your bank.

  • Medicare Part A: Most people get Part A without a premium. However, if you or your spouse didn’t work for at least 40 quarters (10 years), you may owe a monthly premium.
  • Medicare Part B: The standard premium for Part B in 2024 was $174.70. People with a higher income typically pay what’s known as an income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA), which is added to your premium.
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Part C is a private plan, and you’ll need to check with your insurance provider whether they offer online payment options or not.
  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage): Part D is also a private plan, and payment options will be specific to your insurance provider. Part D is also subject to IRMAA fees if you have a certain level of income.

If you receive an IRMAA for parts B or D, you can pay for it using your MyMedicare account. Your owed IRMAA amount will be listed on your Medicare premium bill or electronic Medicare summary notice.

You have two different ways to pay your Medicare premiums online — either through your MyMedicare account or your bank’s bill pay service.

MyMedicare

The first way is through your MyMedicare account. If you don’t have a MyMedicare account, you can create one in just a few minutes. You’ll need to know your Medicare number and your Medicare Part A start date to create your account. You can find both on your Medicare card.

Once you’re logged in to your MyMedicare account, you’ll be able to pay your premiums online. To do this, look for the option to pay your premium. Select it — you’ll be taken to a screen where you can enter the amount you want to pay and the method you want to use. You can pay online using your:

  • credit card
  • debit card
  • checking account
  • savings account

You’ll then be taken to a secure page of the U.S. Treasury (Pay.gov) to complete your payment. You don’t need to create a Pay.gov account.

Once you complete your payment, you can see all your past payments. You can also log back into your MyMedicare account at any time to check the status of your payment. It’ll take between 3 and 5 days for a payment from your checking or savings account to process. Payments made with credit or debit cards typically go through a little faster.

You can also switch to electronic statements while you’re logged into your MyMedicare account by following these steps:

  1. Select “My account.”
  2. Click on “User information.”
  3. Click on “Email and correspondence settings.”
  4. Scroll down until you find a section called “Electronic Medicare summary notices (eMSNs),” and click “Edit.”
  5. Select “Yes” when asked if you want to start getting electronic Medicare summary notices, and you’ll be all set to go paperless.

Bank bill pay service

You can also choose to use your bank’s bill pay service. Not all banks offer this, but many do. If your bank does, you can use your online banking access to pay Medicare. You’ll need to tell your bank your Medicare number and have them send the payments to Medicare.

You’ll need to enter or provide your bank with the following information:

Medicare doesn’t charge you any fees to pay online. There’s no additional cost to you when you use the online payment option. Although you might be charged fees from your bank to use an online bill pay service, most banks offer this feature for free.

You can use MyMedicare to pay your premiums as long as you’re enrolled in Medicare and receive a monthly bill. However, this monthly bill needs to come from Medicare. You can’t pay online if you’re billed by the Railroad Retirement Board. Otherwise, you can pay your Original Medicare premiums and Part D IRMAA online.

You can set up automatic bill payments if you’re worried about missing or being late on your Medicare payments. You can sign up for Medicare Easy Pay and have your premium deducted from your checking or savings account every month. To do this, you’ll need to fill out an authorization form and send it to Medicare to use this service.

You can apply for certain programs if you need help paying your Medicare premiums. These programs are income-based and can help you pay for premiums and other Medicare costs. For example, if you qualify for help paying your Part B premium, you’ll automatically qualify for the Extra Help program. The Extra Help program is for Part D coverage and can lower your premiums, deductibles, and copayments.

You can pay your Medicare premiums online using your MyMedicare account or your bank’s bill pay service. You can use your MyMedicare account to pay your Part A premium, Part B premium, or Part D IRMAA.

There’s no fee to pay your Medicare premiums online.

You might also be able to pay your premiums for Part C, Part D, and Medigap, but it will depend on your plan.
